Under the auspices of the Historical Society of the Methodist Church in Wales, which this year is celebrating its 80th anniversary, a most interesting event is to take place in Llanidloes on 16th May. Everyone is warmly invited.

In October 1946, the very first meeting of the Historical Society was held in Llanidloes and included the unveiling of the plaque on the stone by the Market Hall known as “Wesley’s stone”. John Wesley may well have used this as a makeshift pulpit – certainly he did preach in Llanidloes on at least three occasions as he passed through on his journeys to north Wales and Ireland.

A short service will be held at the market hall at 1pm, with an opportunity also to admire this distinctive building, the only surviving timber-framed market hall in Wales.

Following this we look forward to enjoying the hospitality or Rev Powell and friends at Llanidloes Baptist Church, where the church band and local youth choirs are kindly providing musical entertainment.

There will then by a lecture by the eminent historian Dr Eryn White of Aberystwyth University.

Everyone is invited to have an evening meal together afterwards, to round off what is certain to be a memorable day. Please get in touch with the President of the Historical Society Mr Robin Jones, 01248 670140/07780 869907 so that arrangements can be made and for any further information.

Interesting information may be seen on the founding of the Historical Society in the Bathafarn magazine on the web https://cylchgronau.llyfrgell.cymru/view/1050541/1050621/55#?m=1&xywh=123%2C1571%2C2412%2C1557&cv=54&rid=https%3A%2F%2Fda
