Remembering Aberfan

Rev Gareth Hill reflects on the start of this month’s Aberfan 60 commemoration.

“Reflecting on the weekend's start to this month's Aberfan 60 commemoration. Joy and I spent Saturday morning with the President and Vice President of the Methodist Conference, the Revd Mark Slaney and Caroline Stead, visiting the village and telling the story of Joy's father the Revd Irving Penberthy, who supported the families after the 1966 disaster.

It was a privilege to hear David Davies, one of the rescued children, recall the 116 children and 28 adults who died when a mountain of mining waste engulfed the village school.

Much more to come this month as the focus sharpens leading up to October 21 - the 60th anniversary.

Gratefully thanks to Methodist Cymru chair Andrew Charlesworth for involving us in the visit.”
